The wax candles, bleached by air, sun and dew, were cut by weight and wrapped in blue paper to emphasize their whiteness. A one- pound package of four candles cost over 2 livres tournois (a monetary denomination), equivalent to payment for two days of work by an unskilled laborer or domestic servant.
